JULIA at ITS European Congress 2025: Galileo Takes the Stage in Seville

JULIA had the opportunity to participate in the ITS European Congress 2025, taking place in Seville from 19 to 21 May 2025. The project was featured in the Special Interest Session (SIS)18 titled “Mobility Data to Improve New Mobility Services – Are We There?”. It was the occasion to bring together European mobility leaders to explore the evolving role of data in enabling smarter, safer, and more sustainable transport systems.

The session was organized by Prisca Numbisi and moderated by Dr. Eusebiu Catana (ERTICO – ITS Europe). It was composed of the following panelists:

  • Dr Jakob Lohman (DG MOVE, European Commission)
  • Jon Kuiper (Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Netherlands)
  • Gloria Tarantino, city of Turin
  • Tom Mauno, Fredrikstad city
  • Josep Laborda, Factual Consulting
  • Josep Maria Salanova Grau (Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH))

Josep Laborda, CEO of FACTUAL CONSULTING and coordinator of the JULIA project introduced the audience to the Galileo OSNMA (Open Service Navigation Message Authentication) feature. He explained how JULIA applies OSNMA to public transport, enabling secure trip validation, accurate vehicle tracking, and autonomous shuttle route evaluation. These capabilities are essential for building trust in digital mobility services and protecting against GNSS spoofing threats.

He also shared insights from a recent article in GPS World magazine about the work we’re doing within the JULIA Project.

The JULIA project stood out as a concrete example of how authenticated satellite navigation can enhance the safety, reliability, and transparency of public transport systems, especially as cities move toward integrated, data-driven mobility ecosystems.

The session provided a dynamic panel discussion on data provision frameworks (EMDS, EDIC, NAPCORE), the importance of standards, and the role of governments in enabling next-generation mobility solutions.

SIS 18 offered a compelling look at how trusted data and navigation technologies like Galileo’s OSNMA are shaping the future of European mobility.
