Galileo Technology Powers the Modernisation of Valencia’s Public Transport

Galileo Technology Powers the Modernisation of Valencia’s Public Transport
EMT Valencia is embarking on a transformative journey in partnership with INDRA to modernise its fleet management system. This upgrade will affect 500 buses and is set to be fully implemented by the end of next year. The initiative introduces state-ofthe-art onboard equipment featuring a GNSS receiver with integrated odometer and Dead Reckoning functionality that will allow estimating positions even in cases of loss
of coverage.

Valencia’s public transport system, which serves over 100 million passengers annually, will benefit significantly from this upgrade. The inclusion of a NEO module compatible with Galileo, GPS, GLONASS, and BeiDou will enable a remarkable 95% geolocation accuracy within 7.5 meters.

A key element of the modernisation effort is the adoption of Galileo, the European satellite navigation system. Galileo’s authenticated signals provide tamper-proof
TimeStamp and GeoStamp capabilities, delivering robustness and accuracy. Passengers will enjoy real-time information improvements, including more precise arrival estimates and enhanced route accuracy. Behind the scenes, the integration of Galileo’s features serves as legal evidence of the correctness of the GNSS position for liability issues, such as optimising insurance costs, reducing incidents, and ensuring contract reliability.

This upgrade builds on EMT Valencia’s experience with the ARIADNA project, where the benefits of Galileo-enabled receivers were piloted and proven. EMT Valencia’s modernisation represents a larger movement toward smarter, more sustainable urban transport.
