JULIA – EU Space Forum 24-06-24
On Monday 24-06 the communication and dissemination team of JULIA attended the EU Space Forum bringing together key industry leaders, policymakers, and experts.
This two-day face-to-face event was an opportunity for the participants to discuss key space challenges, such as space sustainability, EU space law, security and defence, or harnessing the power of space data.
The panel “Harnessing the power of space data for a more sustainable and prosperous future” particularly resonated with the JULIA project. Indeed the main objective of the project is to enhance the reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of public transport networks by leveraging EU Space services (Galileo, Copernicus). The panellists from DG DEFIS, European Space Agency (ESA), CNES, VITO, Airbus and Euronews invited us to think about the role space data is playing in fostering the decarbonisation and digitalisation of industries. They all agreed that EU Space Services should be used to solve concrete problems and that new solutions must be developed thinking first about the end-user. They all want to facilitate access to data by creating data marketplaces and platforms but there are still challenges to face to achieve these goals. Mauro Facchini, from DG Defis, particularly emphasised the will of Europe to ensure the resilience and evolution of Galileo and Copernicus. Nicolaus Hanowski, in charge of Earth Observation Missions and the Copernicus Sentinel satellites for the European Space Agency (ESA) highlighted that if all space actors foster collaboration, more and more data types will become available in the future as gravitational or windspeed data, enabling new innovative and commercial uses for all sectors among which mobility.
